Improving Access to Historic Buildings: Some English Experience

In England, accessibility to historic buildings falls under the Equality Act 2010, for which a key concept is making of ‘reasonable adjustments’ physical features building; this acknowledges that blanket application technical requirements would be detrimental some buildings, and equal access may not achievable in every case. 
 This paper approaches England from two angles. The first consideration separate guidance documents, Historic Church respectively; each document outlined, offering points comparison with other jurisdictions. One consistent theme these documents positive framing as benefit only those disabilities, but also all users potentially heritage itself. second aspect comprises three case study projects my own practice, spread across range building types, ages, grades protection, together demonstrate by example what currently considered possible illustrate how practice relates policy guidance. ends briefly reflecting on light might shed broader questions concern.
